Kids love forts and hiding places. Tree houses are a time-honored classic when it comes to the perfect hideaway for your youngsters. If you’ve ever considered building one, but aren’t sure how to approach it, there are many tutorials and plans out there to help you. No matter how you approach the design and the actual building of the tree house, all of your options will have some features in common. So here are the bare bones of how to rig a tree house for the kids:

First, select trees that aren’t too far apart, if you plan to use more than one, or one with main support branches that are fairly close together. Next, gather your materials and tools. New, pressure-treated lumber is best, as safety is the top concern.

You’ll need a support system for the floor. This can be done by bolting wood into the tree, or by using support posts from the ground to the base. Whichever you choose, make sure it’s appropriate for your design. You will need a platform to form the floor. You’ll also need walls. The overall size, of course, will depend on the number of trees or the size of the tree, if you decide to use a single one.

You will need to create a solid platform for the floor. You may have to cut around tree branches. Bear in mind that trees tend to move and bend when the wind blows. Place the platform on the supports, attach them, and add braces for extra stability.

Now add walls, an entrance, and a roof. There are plenty of choices as far as the type of ladder or stairway. A rope ladder is a good, affordable option. Consider adding a pulley with a container attached, to make it easier to get items up and down.

Again, plenty of plans are available to help you with the specifics, once you decide how to approach these basic features. Depending upon your budget, space and available time, you can have a cool new private space ready for your kids in no time!
